Need your opinion - poll is on!

OK. As this is it, our last try, I am being super paranoid about everything I am doing and eating and am thinking of seeing a nutritionist. I am pretty well read in this department, but have spent most of my life as a vegetarian and think it's OK to drink coffee untill a week before the FET. Maybe there is a cleansing, high antioxidant diet, or a diet full of avocados and pears (shown to target the health of the uterus) that I can consider. Maybe she can do all the research for me and guide me into a direction that will improve my chances of the blast attaching. Or am I nuts? The consult is $110. OK I think, for piece of mind. But I will be pissed off if she showes me that Canada food guide and sends me on my way. Really pissed. Please respond to my poll!!

  1. This is an excellent question. As IVF patients, we are always trying to guess what hocus-pocus will improve our chances. Taking special vitamins, adding herbs, eating / avoiding certain foods...

During two of my cycles, I saw an acupuncturist even though Doppler ultrasounds showed the blood flow to my uterus was just fine. During one of these same cycles, I also paid a bundle of money to consult with a fertility hypnotherapist thinking that if I got into the right mental state, I could control the physical. I also tried going gluten-free.

On my last cycle, I didn't to any of it. I did watch my caffeine, but ate carbs, no acupuncture, no hypnosis, no soaking my feet or standing on my head for 15 minutes each day - yet, it worked!

If you think you are going to regret not consulting the nutritionist, then go for it - otherwise, my advice is to put the money into the college fund that you'll be needing after you succeed (which I know you will)!

  2. If you have any blood flow issues CCRM suggests ZERO caffeine of any kind. I didn't have coffee or chocolate for 2 years, but then again I got pregnant while on caffeine - even with my poor blood flow so who really knows?!

  3. Hey Iveta...I think you have to broach such decisions as "will I regret this decision if worse case scenario happens (BFN)". So if it brings you peace to see a dietician...then its worth it. I would also recommend seeing an acupuncturist. I dunno...I just believe in their practice. Plus studies show they improve IVF outcomes...even CCRM has a study to prove it (mostly for women for bad blood flow to the uterus). But it helps everyone in my opinion. I went twice a week for upwards of two months prior to the FET but that was because I had lining issues that was discovered during my mock cycle.

  4. I have to agree with the gals above, you need to do what feels right for you. Choose the path of less regret. ;)

  5. Hi Iveta - I am a dietitian and am naturally suspicious of any kind of special diet unless you have known food allergies. You don't need to "detox" - your liver does that for you. But I too am susceptible to feeling like if I can control what goes in my body, that I will have more control with what happens in there. So maybe there is the placebo effect in that. A friend told me yesterday that I need to go gluten-free and now I feel guilty about my morning toast. My instinct tells me that there is no special food that is going help you get pregnant, but then again it's hard to be 100% sure. As a dietitian, who has worked at the Health Dept for 3 years, I can tell you most people eat crap and still get pregnant.
